Celebrating Earth Day: 10 of the Most Magical Places on Earth
Earth Day 2023!
Let's celebrate Earth Day 2023 by highlighting the beauty and wonder that our earth has to offer.
1. Caño Cristales - a river in Colombia that is also known as the River of Five Colors. This river is has extremely clear water as a result of a lack of nutrients (and fish), but from June to November, an endemic aquatic plant, perfect water levels, and sunlight create the vibrant colors seen below
2. The Great Barrier Reef - the largest coral reef on world located on the Northeastern coast of Australia. There are over known 9000 species that inhabit the Great Barrier Reef.
3. The Northern Lights - also known as Aurora Borealis, this phenomenon can be seen best in the Northern Hemisphere. When solar wind impacts the atmosphere, these displays of lights are created.
4. Victoria Falls - the world's largest waterfall. This waterfall is home to a multitude of species and is located on the Zambezi River bordering Zimbabwe and Zambia. Victoria Falls first started forming over 20,000 years ago and is now over 1700 meters wide.
5. Sea of Stars Beach - best seen on the Maldives in Valdoo Island, the light seen in the Sea of Stars Beach is created by bioluminescent phytoplankton.
6. Avenue of Baobabs - located in Western Madagascar, this path of ancient Baobab trees grows on an unpaved road called Road No. 8. Originally, these trees were part of a great Baobab forest. Now, these remaining trees stand as part of a border in Madagascar's Menabe Region.
7. Rainbow Hills of China - these rainbow mountains were formed almost 20 million years ago. Part of the Zhangye Danxia National Geopark, the Rainbow Hills of China are made up of sandstone and other minerals that give it the prism of colors seen below.
8. Antelope Canyon - a slot canyon in Arizona. Antelope Canyon has two parts: the Upper Canyon, also known as the Crack, and the Lower Canyon, also known as the Corkscrew. This canyon was formed out of Navajo sandstone, which gives this place its smooth red texture.
10. Lake Baikal - finally, the last stunning location in this post is all the way from Russia, specifically, Southern Siberia. This lake's water is so clear that in the winter, its frozen shards appear to be turquoise. Formed from moving faults in a rift zone, Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in the world as well as the oldest, containing about 20% of earth's freshwater.
